Microsoft on Wednesday released a statement aimed at convincing global IT leaders, and particularly those in Europe, that it can still be trusted, but analysts in Europe said its statement was not persuasive. Much of the European nervousness comes from American tariffs and the inevitable responding tariffs from the European Union (EU). But the fears go beyond that, with some European IT and cybersecurity executives worried about what American technology firms might be forced to do by the Trump administration. Those fears are fueled by the recent politicization of security clearances. Microsoft’s detailed statement, attributed to vice-chair and president Brad [...]
Zoho on Wednesday announced the addition of 10 AI-centric services and features within Zoho Creator, the company’s low code application development platform, that it said are part of its pledge to invest only in “AI capabilities that drive real-time, practical and secure benefits to business users.” The expanded offerings include CoCreator, the firm’s new AI “development partner” powered by Zia, Zoho’s AI assistant, that it said in a release “facilitates faster, simpler and more intelligent app building with the use of voice and written prompts, process flows and business specification documents.” New features also include the ability to transform unstructured [...]
President Donald J. Trump recently signed an executive order to bring AI into K–12 education to boost literacy around the technology and create a new White House task force to lead the effort. The task force plans to form public-private partnerships with AI experts to develop online resources for K-12 AI literacy and critical thinking and will seek industry commitments and federal funding to support the effort; the goal is to ensure resources are available for K-12 instruction within 180 days. As part of the plan, the US Secretary of Education must within 90 days issue guidance on using federal [...]
I can still remember the first time I attended a press launch for a professional Mac – the January 1999 introduction of the Blue and White Power Mac G3, which Apple wanted the world to believe was faster than Intel PCs of similar clock speed. Today, Apple’s new professional Mac Studio absolutely devours any other system when it comes to processor performance and energy efficiency. What a difference a quarter century makes. I’ve spent time with the Mac Studio M4 Max in recent weeks. This model was equipped with an M4 Max chip boasting 16 CPU cores, 40 GPU cores, a 1TB [...]
Laptops are great, but you don’t have to limit yourself to a tiny laptop screen — especially when you’re using a laptop at a desk. Adding a second screen is easier and cheaper than ever. The same is true if you’re using a desktop PC, too. No matter how you’re working, there’s no reason to limit yourself to just one monitor. Heck, even the word “monitor” can have multiple meanings. You can project from your a laptop to a TV, wirelessly, in just a few clicks. Or you can get a lightweight portable monitor for more screen real estate anywhere [...]
Microsoft is worth roughly $1 trillion today, but that sky-high valuation didn’t come without a few train wrecks during its first 50 years. I’m not talking about smaller screwups like the brain-dead Clippy, Microsoft’s intrusive Office helper from 1995. Instead, I’m looking at the ones with major consequences that in some cases set Microsoft back years, made it lose out on important markets, and cost the company billions of dollars. Here are the company’s four worst screw-ups. (And here’s a look at its biggest successes.) Microsoft’s antitrust trial and the lost decade During Microsoft’s first 23 years, the company was [...]
Hey — have ya heard? Google’s got a simple-sounding but supremely useful new trick in the works for its homemade Pixel phones. Under-development code spotted in the latest Android beta reveals plans for adding a new double-tap gesture into future Pixel devices. It may or may not make the cut for the upcoming Android 16 release, but it’s absolutely in progress — and odds are, it’ll show up in some new Android version or quarterly update before long. The way it’d work is refreshingly straightforward: Just tap twice in a row anywhere on your screen, anytime, and poof: The screen [...]
Yesterday, we looked at how tariffs might well make connected accessories more expensive and leave existing devices less secure as the companies that made them exit the market. Today, we discover why these accessories need to be protected and find out they can already be attacked. If nothing else, it should encourage any consumer or enterprise user relying on connected accessories to take the time to verify that all of them are truly secure. Those that are not should be removed from use – and from your network. All the forgotten endpoints Wired tells us that Oligo security researchers have discovered flaws in [...]
It’s no secret that IT workers can easily get burned out. They often have too much to do and feel stressed trying to keep up with technology that’s always changing. The meteoric growth of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, in business has only exacerbated the problem, with tech workers feeling pressure to learn relevant skills and even fearing they’ll be replaced by bots. Another factor contributing to IT burnout is the rise of remote and hybrid work since the start of the Covid pandemic in 2020. The continuous demands of hybrid work environments aggravate worker stress, often leading to a [...]
Alibaba and Baidu are intensifying the battle for leadership in China’s fast-evolving AI market, with both companies unveiling upgraded models focused on dynamic reasoning capabilities. On Tuesday, Alibaba launched Qwen 3, an enhanced version of its flagship AI model. The upgrade introduces hybrid reasoning, designed to improve adaptability and efficiency for app and software developers. It follows a rapid-fire development pace from Alibaba, which pushed out Qwen 2.5-Max in January, just days after startup DeepSeek shook the industry by showcasing high-performing models at lower costs compared to Western competitors. Meanwhile, Baidu, the Chinese search giant, introduced two new models late [...]
